The Spokesman for the Federal House of Representatives, Mr. Akin Rotimi, voiced his concerns on Monday about the negative impact social media is having on Nigerian families.

He stated that the platform has become a breeding ground for harmful ideologies, foreign cultures, and immorality.

Rotimi explained that these online influences have exposed Nigerians to content that promotes social vices while ridiculing values of virtue and good conduct.

The lawmaker, representing Ekiti North 1 (Ikole/Oye) Federal Constituency, made these comments during the 2nd edition of the Easter Family Life Thanksgiving Service in Ikole-Ekiti, the administrative headquarters of Ikole Ekiti Local Government Area.

Speaking under the theme ‘Rebuilding Families, Renewing Nigeria: The Role of the Church’, Rotimi highlighted the alarming trend where society has come to accept practices that are not in line with moral teachings.

He described this shift as not just cultural, but a spiritual struggle that must be addressed.

He emphasized that Nigeria can only prosper if families are strengthened through the restoration of values such as dignity, contentment, and hard work, while reshaping collective thinking through godly principles.

“We are gathered here today not just for a moment of reflection but as a declaration of our faith and convictions. As Scripture teaches, righteousness exalts a nation, and the foundation of righteousness starts at home. A nation flourishes when family units uphold love, discipline, godliness, and mutual respect,” Rotimi stated.

“As a public servant, representing over half a million people across 40 communities, I continue to work hard to close the gaps in public service delivery. However, we are living in a time where the family unit is under attack. The sanctity of marriage is being undermined by false ideologies and moral relativism. Our children are constantly exposed to music, films, and social media content that glorifies vices and mocks good moral values,” he added.

Rotimi further lamented that behaviors and practices once considered immoral are now being normalized and even celebrated.

He called it a spiritual battle and urged the church to rise as a moral guide, leading families back to God’s original purpose for them.
