Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has awarded N10 million to Isioma Sybil Nwosu, the top graduating student of the 2023/2024 academic session at Lagos State University (LASU).

 

Nwosu, a Biochemistry graduate from the Faculty of Science, achieved an outstanding Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.93.

 

The Governor made the announcement on Thursday during LASU’s 28th Convocation Ceremony at the Buba Marwa Auditorium in Ojo.

 

The ceremony also featured the conferring of Honorary Doctorates and Distinguished Professorships on notable individuals, including Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (retd.), Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, and former Lagos State Deputy Governor, Otunba Olufemi Pedro.

 

Marwa was awarded the Doctor of Humane Letters Honoris Causa, while Pedro received the Doctor of Business (Banking, Entrepreneurship, and National Development) Honoris Causa.

 

Represented by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of education in driving societal progress.

 

He urged that academic excellence should be celebrated alongside achievements in entertainment, fashion, and sports, calling for a shift in culture that prioritizes knowledge and innovation.

 

The Governor also reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to improving tertiary education through infrastructure investments, particularly in state-owned universities.

 

He highlighted initiatives like the Job Initiative Lagos, designed to enhance the employability of final-year students.

 

LASU’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, expressed gratitude to the state government for its continued support, noting that 43 out of 44 university courses received accreditation in the 2023 accreditation exercise.

 

She also announced the launch of new postgraduate programs and welcomed international students to the Africa Centre of Excellence for Innovative and Transformative STEM Education.

 

Prof. Gbolahan Elias (SAN), LASU’s Chancellor, encouraged graduates to remain ambassadors of their university, families, and state, urging them to stay focused and innovative as they pursue future success.

 

A total of 11,917 students graduated at the event, including 971 Diploma holders, 8,711 first-degree graduates, 2,235 Postgraduate students, and 125 PhD recipients.
