The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has criticized the recent endorsement of President Bola Tinubu as the sole presidential candidate for the 2027 election by the All Progressives Congress (APC) governors, describing it as a desperate and panicked attempt to cling to power.

In a statement released Thursday night by its National Secretary, Peter Ameh, the CUPP said the endorsement proposed by Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum, Hope Uzodimma, and seconded by Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has sparked widespread concern among Nigerians.

“This unprecedented declaration, just two years into President Tinubu’s tenure, reflects internal unease within the APC and highlights a disconnect from the growing public discontent over the nation’s economic hardships,” the statement read.

Ameh argued that the decision to anoint Tinubu as the sole candidate does not represent the will of the Nigerian people, who ultimately hold the power to decide leadership through the ballot.

“The endorsement seems to be driven by fear of rejection from an electorate currently facing severe economic struggles,” he added. “This move is being seen by many Nigerians as an alarming attempt to bypass the democratic process.”

He further warned that the events surrounding the 2023 elections have only strengthened the public’s resolve to defend their democratic rights.

“We are united in our determination to resist any attempts to manipulate, steal, or rig the 2027 elections. Nigerians will not be silenced,” Ameh said.

The CUPP called on citizens to remain vigilant and committed to protecting democracy, emphasizing that the 2027 elections will be pivotal for the country’s future.
