Ochanya Lamai, a Mass Communication lecturer at Nasarawa State University, is gaining attention on TikTok for her lively videos featuring students.
Her account, @ochanyalamai, now boasts over 19,700 followers, with content that blends humor, dance, and campus life.
Nicknamed “Mummy Gen-Z,” Lamai wears many hats lecturer, broadcaster, entrepreneur, and content creator. Her online presence has drawn praise for challenging the stereotype of stern Nigerian lecturers and making education more relatable to Gen Z.
Still, not everyone is on board. Some critics question the professionalism of her content. Responding with humor, Lamai recently lip-synced to Ruger’s “Giveaway,” with lyrics like:
“I am obsessed, I am so in love with myself… You cannot shame the shameless, you gats work on yourself…”
Her mix of dance skits and playful student interactions has sparked debate. Some admire her energy; others see it as inappropriate for academia.
Comments reflect this divide “I am a lecturer too, but you are painting the wrong picture,” said Boyce Iyamah.
@stone__xxl wrote, “I wish I was in this school and this department, to graduate no go even sweet me.”
“I think this woman is the only female lecturer in Nigeria that is happy to be a lecturer. Others always look angry,” said Tonia_ify.
“This is a social media lecturer, nawa ooo,” added Young Lyf.
Whether seen as refreshing or controversial, Lamai’s presence is redefining how educators connect with students in the digital era.
