Following the recent approval of Nigeria’s Marine and Blue Economy Policy by the Federal Executive Council (FEC), the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has said the new framework provides a comprehensive roadmap for transforming the nation’s vast aquatic resources into engines of economic growth, job creation, and environmental sustainability.

In a statement released by his Media and Communications Adviser, Dr. Bolaji Akinola, Oyetola emphasized that the policy marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s quest to unlock the full potential of its marine sector, which includes 853 kilometers of coastline and extensive inland waterways.

“We now have a policy that speaks to our aspirations and equips us with the tools to achieve them,” Oyetola stated. “From maritime trade and aquaculture to blue tourism and clean ocean energy, this document outlines clear and actionable pathways to national development.”

Describing the policy as both visionary and timely, the minister commended the FEC’s endorsement and expressed confidence that it would lay a strong foundation for sustainable prosperity over the next decade. He said the policy not only offers strategic direction but also incorporates a long-term implementation plan that balances environmental protection with inclusive economic growth.

“This is a defining moment for our nation,” Oyetola said. “The approval of this policy by the Federal Executive Council signals a new dawn in how Nigeria engages with its marine and aquatic assets. It is more than just a policy document—it is a bold declaration of our intent to build a sustainable and thriving blue economy.”
