A faction of the Social Democratic Party, led by Chief Wole Adesina, has distanced itself from a growing political coalition aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu, warning that such efforts lack a clear vision for Nigeria’s future.

In a statement on Monday, the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Alfa Mohammed, decried what he described as an “influx of aggrieved politicians” forming desperate alliances to “send President Bola Tinubu back to Lagos” without offering any credible alternative for national development.

This comes as PUNCH reports revealed that former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, who recently left the ruling APC, has joined the SDP and vowed to mobilize against Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027. El-Rufai is reportedly in talks with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Tinubu’s political arch-rival.

However, the Adesina-led faction of the SDP has distanced itself from the coalition, alleging that those behind it lack a progressive vision for the country. Alfa Mohammed declared that the party “is not for sale or lease” and will not support any anti-government coalition without a clear agenda for Nigeria’s transformation.

The faction reaffirmed its commitment to constructive engagement with the Tinubu-led administration while fulfilling its democratic obligation to hold the government accountable. It firmly rejected participation in any movement aimed at destabilizing the government or undermining the electoral mandate of Nigerians.

The SDP leadership also called on party members nationwide to resist attempts to hijack the party’s leadership and report such acts to relevant authorities. The faction likened the current power tussle to the 2019 crisis, when former PDP stalwarts attempted to seize control of the party, resulting in protracted legal battles.

Amid these developments, the Adesina-led National Executive Committee has pledged to continue efforts to reclaim full recognition from the Independent National Electoral Commission while keeping the SDP open to genuine, committed new members.
