Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison will miss the remainder of the season due to a knee injury, manager Ange Postecoglou confirmed ahead of Thursday’s Europa League semi-final second leg against Bodo/Glimt.
Maddison sustained the injury after scoring in Spurs’ 3-1 victory during the first leg last week. Following medical tests, it was determined the England international will play no further part in the current campaign.
“It’s disappointing for him,” Postecoglou said during Wednesday’s press conference. “He’s played a key role for us, especially in Europe, and it’s unfortunate he won’t be involved again this season.”
The 28-year-old’s absence adds to a growing list of injury concerns for Tottenham, who are also without captain Son Heung-min due to a foot problem. However, striker Dominic Solanke has been passed fit and will be available for the decisive match in Norway.
“Everyone else from the first leg has travelled and is ready to go,” Postecoglou added. “Sonny has made some progress and might feature at the weekend, but he hasn’t trained with the squad yet.”
Tottenham are chasing their first European title since winning the UEFA Cup in 1984, and their first piece of silverware in 17 years. Despite a difficult domestic season that sees them sitting 16th in the Premier League and speculation over Postecoglou’s future, the squad remains focused.
Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario acknowledged the challenges but stressed the importance of squad depth: “We’ve had to deal with injuries all season. Missing Maddison and Son is tough, but we know it’s up to the whole squad to step up.”
