The former spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) 2023 presidential candidate, Segun Sowunmi has indicated he may leave the PDP to back President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during an appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Tuesday evening, Sowunmi stated that he would formally defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) before offering his support to President Tinubu.
“If I’m going to support Tinubu in 2027, by God and everything that is in me, I will leave and join his party,” he said. “I don’t believe in the idea of being in one party while backing a candidate from another. I don’t do pretence, if I’m not with you, I’m not with you.”
Sowunmi, who noted that he has been with the PDP for 28 years, criticized internal party issues and what he described as a lack of reform. He emphasized that many within the party lack such long-term commitment.
“There is a very strong possibility that I may leave,” he continued. “Considering the situation in my environment, my state, and my ethnic background, along with my desire for meaningful change, I may likely exit the party. I’ve been calling for reforms, and when those calls are ignored, one has to make tough decisions.”
