Local News Atiku’s former aide Sowunmi hints at dumping PDP to back Tinubu Modupeola Showunmi June 11, 2025 Segun Sowunmi, a former spokesperson for ex-PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, has indicated he might leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to support President Bola Tinubu. Speaking during an appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Tuesday evening, Sowunmi said he would only back Tinubu in the 2027 elections if he officially joins the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), emphasizing that he doesn’t support political double-dealing. “If I decide to support President Tinubu in 2027, I will join his party first. I don’t subscribe to the idea of staying in one party and supporting another,” he said. He criticized internal issues within the PDP, noting that despite being a member for 28 years—far longer than many others—he would not hesitate to walk away if necessary. “I’ve spent nearly three decades in the PDP. Some members don’t even have 28 days of experience. But if I decide to leave to support Tinubu, I’ll do so openly,” he added. Sowunmi also expressed frustration over the lack of reforms within the PDP, saying he had long advocated for change within the party. Based on developments in his state, ethnic group, and broader political environment, he admitted there’s a strong chance he could exit the PDP.
