The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has issued a strong condemnation of the recent mass killings in Benue State, where over 200 lives were lost in a series of brutal attacks. The association is calling on the Federal Government to respond with urgency and resolve.

In a statement released Monday and signed by CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the association expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, offering prayers for the victims and extending heartfelt condolences to their families.

“The Christian Association of Nigeria strongly condemns the horrific wave of violence that recently swept through Benue State, resulting in the tragic loss of over 200 lives in a series of coordinated attacks,” the statement read.

Describing the killings as “senseless,” CAN highlighted the deep trauma inflicted on communities and the growing threat such violence poses to national security.

Archbishop Okoh decried the persistent pattern of attacks in Benue and criticized the lack of justice and protection for affected communities. He called for decisive federal intervention, including the possibility of declaring a state of emergency in the worst-hit areas.

“For too long, the people of Benue have suffered repeated attacks, often blamed on armed groups, with little or no accountability. This failure has emboldened the perpetrators and prolonged the cycle of violence,” he stated.

CAN’s Key Demands

To curb the crisis, CAN outlined several urgent actions for the government to immediately deploy additional security personnel to at-risk areas, declaration of a state of emergency in the most affected localities, an independent, transparent investigation and swift prosecution of those behind the attacks and engagement from the international community to support peace and community rebuilding.

“Justice must prevail to end the culture of impunity driving these atrocities. We call on the global community to stand with Benue in this time of need,” the statement added.

CAN reaffirmed its dedication to upholding the sanctity of life and advocating for the safety and dignity of every Nigerian.

“The Christian Association of Nigeria remains steadfast in its mission to defend human life. We pray for lasting peace and that justice will flow like a river across our land.”
