Chelsea opened their FIFA Club World Cup 2025 journey with a confident 2-0 win over Los Angeles FC in Group D action at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Monday.
Despite a low turnout with just over 22,000 fans in a stadium built to hold 71,000, the Blues delivered a professional performance to secure three points, with goals from Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernández.
Neto opened the scoring midway through the first half after a well-timed pass from Nicolas Jackson. The Portuguese winger weaved past LAFC defender Ryan Hollingshead with a clever cut before firing a low shot past goalkeeper Hugo Lloris at the near post.
Enzo Fernández doubled the lead in the second half, finishing a move assisted by new signing Liam Delap, who came on for his Chelsea debut. The Argentine’s composed finish capped off a dominant display by Enzo Maresca’s side, who are aiming to make a statement following their recent UEFA Conference League victory and return to Champions League football.
Chelsea controlled much of the game, forcing several saves from Lloris, including efforts from Jackson and Noni Madueke, while Cole Palmer came close with a strike just over the bar.
LAFC, who qualified for the tournament after defeating Club América in a late play-off and replacing banned Mexican club León, were limited in attack. Their small section of traveling supporters tried to lift the mood with constant chants and drumbeats behind Lloris’ goal.
Nonetheless, Chelsea will be pleased with a solid start to the tournament as they look to progress deep into the competition and reassert their status among Europe’s top clubs.
