The United States Mission in Nigeria has released a security warning advising American citizens to steer clear of military and government sites in Abuja unless absolutely necessary, due to rising global security threats.

According to the advisory issued on Monday by the US Embassy, staff members of the embassy and their families are currently barred from visiting any military or government premises in the Nigerian capital unless it is for official duties.

The alert follows unspecified international events that have led to increased security vigilance and restricted movement around sensitive locations.

US nationals living in or traveling to Nigeria have been urged to exercise caution in public spaces, especially in places commonly visited by Westerners, expatriates, and government figures.

The embassy further advised citizens to stay away from large crowds, avoid predictable routines, and make sure they are aware of emergency exits in any building they enter.

Americans were also encouraged to re-evaluate their personal security arrangements and remain highly cautious throughout their stay in Nigeria.

The statement read in part, “Due to increased security concerns arising from current global developments, US Mission Nigeria informs US citizens that all US Embassy employees and their families are prohibited from non-official travel to a Nigerian military site or other government venue in Abuja at this time.

“Actions to take: Stay alert in public places, with particular attention to locations and venues where Westerners, expatriates, and government officials frequent.

“Avoid large gatherings and consider limiting unnecessary travel. Avoid predictable routines. Familiarise yourself with emergency exits when you enter buildings. Review your personal security plans.”

Although the restrictions are in effect, the US Embassy’s Consular Sections in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos continue to operate as usual.

Citizens in need of help or additional information were encouraged to visit the embassy’s official website.
