Traditional rulers in the South-West, led by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, will meet with Yoruba nation activist and founder of Iru Ekun Security Network, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, today to discuss security in the region.
The meeting is scheduled for Friday in Ijero Ekiti, Ekiti State, and will be hosted by the Owa Ajero of Ijero Ekiti, Oba Adebayo Adewole.
In a statement issued by Igboho’s media office in Ibadan on Friday, organisers said the stakeholders’ meeting will focus on critical issues including security in Yorubaland and sustaining peace and communal stability across the South-West.
The statement read: “This crucial meeting to be graced by all monarchs from Oyo, Lagos, Ondo, Osun, Ekiti, Ogun, and parts of Kwara State will be presided over by the Co-Chairman of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, who also doubles as the Permanent Chairman of the Southern Nigerian Traditional Rulers Council.
“The meeting will dwell extensively on measures aimed at ensuring effective security of the South-West and synergy with local security initiatives such as the Iru Ekun Security Network to protect Yorubaland, especially rural communities, against any breach.
“It will also focus on the active involvement of traditional rulers in local security, given their closeness to the grassroots and their critical roles in preventing crises and managing disputes between Yoruba ethnic nationalities and other tribes in South-West communities.”
The statement commended the support of the Nigerian Army, DSS, Nigeria Police, and other security agencies to Iru Ekun Security Network, and pledged continued cooperation with all stakeholders to sustain peace in the region.
“We want to specifically appreciate the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, the Minister of Defence, Gen Christopher Musa (retd), the Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, Director-General of DSS, Adeola Ajayi, and other heads of paramilitary agencies for their visible efforts, which have culminated in a drastic reduction of cases of insecurity and other criminalities in Nigeria,” it added.
