Arsenal have stepped up their pursuit of Julián Álvarez after making direct contact with Atlético Madrid to discuss the conditions of a potential transfer for the Argentine forward.
According to reports, talks between the two clubs have taken place in London, with Atlético sporting director Mateu Alemany involved in the discussions.
Arsenal have maintained a strong interest in Álvarez throughout the summer as they look to strengthen their attacking options. The Gunners have reportedly remained in contact with both Atlético and the player’s representatives as uncertainty continues over the 26-year-old’s future.
Álvarez has expressed a desire to leave Atlético and has reportedly favoured a move to Barcelona. However, the Spanish club are reluctant to sell the striker to the Catalan giants and have shown greater willingness to consider a move to Arsenal.
The latest meeting could therefore represent an important step in Arsenal’s efforts to establish whether a deal can be reached with Atlético.
However, a transfer is far from guaranteed. Atlético have previously insisted that Álvarez is an important part of their plans, with CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín publicly maintaining that the club did not want to sell him.
