Veteran Nollywood comic actor Afeez Oyetoro, popularly known as Saka, has opened up about the personal challenges that delayed his decision to marry until the age of 40.
In a candid interview on WithChude, the 61-year-old actor revealed that a lack of self-confidence and financial instability were the major reasons he stayed single for so long.
“I didn’t have the confidence to even approach women,” he admitted. “I married late because of two major things: my profession and myself.”
Saka explained that his early years in theatre were driven purely by passion, not profit. At the time, he said, acting was not considered a viable career path, and the business side of the industry was rarely discussed or taught.
“There was no money in theatre back then. We were acting out of passion, and unfortunately, our mentors didn’t teach us how to make money from it. So, I was financially unprepared,” he said.
The actor also shared how his modest lifestyle impacted his relationships, recalling how a woman he once hoped to marry questioned his future.
“I had nothing, no car, no assets. One of them even told me, ‘Afeez, you’re wasting your life. Leave this theatre and find something meaningful to do.’”
He went on to describe another relationship in which his partner demanded he own two cars before marriage.
“At that point, something told me she wasn’t the one for me, so I walked away,” he said.
Saka eventually found love and stability later in life. He met his wife, Olaide Oyetoro, while in college, and the couple married in 2003. They now have three children.
Afeez Oyetoro holds degrees in Theatre Arts from Obafemi Awolowo University and the University of Ibadan. Today, he remains one of Nigeria’s most beloved comic actors, known for his vibrant roles across film, television, and advertising.
