The Rivers State Police Command has arrested Cynthia Chukwundah, a 300-level student of the University of Port Harcourt, for allegedly setting her lover, Sunny Amadi, on fire during a dispute over her pregnancy.

The tragic incident occurred on Sunday at a private residence on Okoro Street in Choba, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area. According to reports, an argument between the two escalated, leading Cynthia to allegedly douse Amadi in fuel and set him ablaze.

Amadi, 32, sustained severe burns and was rushed to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Police spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident in a statement on Tuesday, adding that the suspect, who also suffered burns, is currently receiving medical treatment at an undisclosed hospital under police watch.

“She is heavily pregnant with the deceased’s child and is yet to give a detailed account of the events due to her critical condition,” Iringe-Koko said.

She noted that the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, and a full probe has been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, urged the public to remain calm, assuring that justice would be served.
