The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is currently embroiled in a crisis following a coalition led by former Senate President, Senator David Mark, which has been strongly condemned by the party’s state chairmen.

In a joint statement titled “Rejecting the Political Junta by Defending ADC and Nigeria’s Democracy Against Subversion,” signed by forum leader Elias Adokwu and Publicity Secretary Godwin Alaku, the chairmen described the move as an unconstitutional and reckless attempt to hijack the party.

They accused Senator Mark’s coalition of orchestrating a “political coup” through manipulation and backdoor dealings, branding it a dangerous assault on both the ADC and Nigeria’s democratic values.

“We strongly condemn this desperate power grab, which undermines democratic norms and insults those committed to democratic governance in Nigeria,” the statement read.

The chairmen dismissed the coalition’s actions as a self-serving agenda disguised as political realignment, warning it represents a “civilian junta” trying to seize control outside legal frameworks.

They urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to reject any efforts to legitimize this “illegitimate junta,” and called on the public and civil society to resist creeping authoritarianism.

Reaffirming the party’s commitment to democracy, rule of law, and ideological clarity, the chairmen declared, “The ADC is not for sale or hijack and will not be a platform for political mercenaries or impostors.”

The statement concluded by emphasizing the chairmen’s duty to protect the party’s democratic integrity and called for investigations into the unlawful takeover attempt.
