The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Joseph Ikpea, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the winner of the Edo Central Senatorial District by-election held on Saturday.
The Returning Officer, Prof. Kingsley Omo-Iwoze, announced the results in the early hours of Sunday at the collation centre in Ubiaja, headquarters of Esan South-East Local Government Area.
According to him, Ikpea secured 105,129 votes, defeating his closest rival, Joe Okojie of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who polled 15,146 votes.
Prof. Omo-Iwoze officially declared: “I, Prof. Kingsley Omo-Iwoze, hereby certify that Joseph Ikpea of the All Progressives Congress, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is duly declared winner of the 2025 Edo Central Senatorial District by-election, held on 16th August, 2024.”
In his acceptance speech, Ikpea dedicated his victory to God and the people of Edo Central, saying they had chosen “vision over sentiment and progress over politics-as-usual.” He pledged to work closely with Governor Monday Okpebholo, the APC, and traditional/community leaders to deliver on his mandate.
He also promised to focus on legislation and initiatives in infrastructure, youth empowerment, education, healthcare, and strengthening traditional institutions.
The Edo Central senatorial seat became vacant after its former occupant, Monday Okpebholo, was elected Governor of Edo State.
