Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has strongly criticised the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) over its proposal to raise the salaries of political office holders by more than 100 per cent.
In a statement issued Wednesday on his X handle, Obi described the move as “a shameless grab for more” at the expense of ordinary Nigerians grappling with harsh economic realities.
He argued that the proposed hike is “totally unjustifiable” and reflects the “greed and insensitivity” of the political class.
“The recent proposal by RMAFC to increase the salaries of political leaders is causing widespread anger and bitterness among Nigerians. Such thinking, amid the worsening living conditions of citizens, portrays the insensitivity of leaders and exposes their greed,” Obi stated.
The former Anambra governor faulted the timing of the proposal, saying it prioritises the welfare of politicians over the dire needs of the masses. He particularly condemned the neglect of security personnel and other public servants, who, according to him, remain underpaid and overworked despite their critical role in national development.
“It is disturbing that RMAFC is more concerned about the welfare of political office holders rather than security personnel, especially police officers, who face enormous risks but earn meagre wages,” Obi said.
He stressed that political office should be regarded as a service to the nation, not an avenue for personal enrichment, and urged government agencies to focus on improving the living conditions of civil servants and other public workers.
Obi further called on RMAFC to shelve the proposed increment and instead “prioritise the welfare of Nigerians, particularly those in the public service, who have been neglected for far too long.”
