The Kano State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old man, Mutawakilu Ibrahim, for allegedly stabbing his grandparents to death during a dispute over food at their residence in Kofar Dawanau Quarters, Dala Local Government Area.
Police spokesperson SP Abdullahi Kiyawa said in a statement that the incident occurred on Thursday around 9:30 am and was promptly reported at the Dala Divisional Police Headquarters.
The suspect, believed to have been under the influence of intoxicants, allegedly used a knife to attack Muhammad Dansokoto, 75, and Hadiza Tasidi, 65, inflicting multiple stab wounds. The victims were rushed to the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, where doctors confirmed them dead on arrival.
Their remains were examined and later released to family members for burial in line with Islamic rites.
Reacting to the tragedy, the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, directed the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Homicide Section, for further investigation.
“The suspect will be charged in court upon completion of the investigation,” the police spokesperson added.
Kano, Nigeria’s most populous state, has recorded a rise in family-related violent crimes in recent years, often linked to drug abuse, mental health challenges, and economic hardship. Civil society groups have consistently warned that illicit substance use among youths contributes to violent behaviour and domestic disputes, sometimes with deadly consequences.
