The presidential candidate of Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi has described Ibadan as a city whose contributions to Nigeria’s history cannot be overlooked.
Obi made the remark on Sunday during a courtesy visit to the Olubadan-designate, Senator Rashidi Ladoja, at his Bodija residence in Ibadan, Oyo State. He was accompanied by Labour Party leaders and prominent members of the Igbo community.
The former Anambra State governor commended the people of Ibadan for their long-standing impact on Nigeria’s socio-economic and political development.
“The role of Ibadan in the history of Nigeria is undeniable. This city is home to all, thanks to the hospitality of its indigenes,” Obi said.
He further praised Ladoja, noting his wealth of experience as a former governor and senator. Obi expressed confidence that these qualities would guide the incoming monarch as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.
“Oba Ladoja will have the support of people across the country in this new assignment. For my part, I will give all necessary assistance to ensure a successful reign,” he added.
In his response, Ladoja described his forthcoming coronation as an opportunity to continue serving humanity, attributing his life and new role to the grace of God.
“The Olubadan stool is not about glamour; it is about service to the people,” he said. “It is God who enthrones the Olubadan not wealth or influence. The time of glamour is over; it is now about what you can offer society.”
