The Oyo State College of Nursing Sciences, Eleyele, Ibadan, has inaugurated four new faculties as part of efforts to expand nursing education and solidify its collegiate status.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, the elevation transforms the former Departments of Nursing, Midwifery, and Public Health into standalone faculties of Medical-Surgical, Maternal & Child Health, Public Health and Community Care, and Psychiatric and Mental Health.
The Provost of the College, Dr. Gbonjubola Owolabi, described the restructuring as a milestone in the advancement of nursing education in Nigeria.
“The new framework in the college marks a significant milestone for the institution and the nursing profession in Nigeria. I therefore urge the new deans of faculties to work assiduously towards the attainment of world-class products from the college,” she said.
Owolabi commended the new deans, formerly heads of departments, for their dedication and acknowledged Governor Seyi Makinde’s support, noting that the college had begun discussions with the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, on running degree programmes.
In his keynote address, the Pro-Chancellor of LAUTECH, Prof. Ayodeji Omole, hailed the move as a turning point for nursing education.
“With this inauguration of new faculties, the College will witness a turning point in nursing education and practice,” he said, praising Owolabi’s resilience and affirming LAUTECH’s commitment to supporting the college’s pursuit of degree-awarding status.
The development comes on the back of recent government approvals for 116 staff appointments, the confirmation of four principal officers, and full accreditation granted to the College by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria in late 2024.
