Morayo Afolabi-Brown, Managing Director of TVC Entertainment and former host of Your View, has spoken candidly about her decision to support President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 general elections, citing personal ties and a sense of conviction.
Speaking on the With Chude podcast, Afolabi-Brown shared how Tinubu’s support for her family during a difficult time influenced her stance.
“My father was the president of the Nigerian Bar Association and a human rights activist. During his illness, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, who was governor at the time, stood by my mother and supported our family covering medical bills and helping us through tough times,” she said.
She also credited Tinubu with playing a significant role in her brother’s political journey.
“He held my brother’s hand in politics. He really stood with us.”
Afolabi-Brown clarified that her career at TVC was earned independently. “I got the job at TVC purely on merit. It had nothing to do with Asiwaju.”
When asked about her involvement in Tinubu’s 2023 campaign, she described it as a deliberate and personal choice.
“I received a letter from the women’s arm of the campaign inviting me to work. I had two choices, say no or support him. I chose to support him because I genuinely believed in his candidacy.”
Reflecting on the decision, she drew a parallel with Oprah Winfrey’s endorsement of Barack Obama.
“I was skeptical at first, but there’s nothing wrong with having a personal opinion. I accepted the offer and worked closely with the media team. It was a valuable experience.”
Addressing questions about her neutrality, Afolabi-Brown acknowledged the public perception but stood by her integrity.
“There’s a perception that I may not be neutral, but perception isn’t always reality. TVC, I believe, is one of the most objective stations. It’s hard to believe, but it’s the truth.”
She also recently stepped down from Your View, the talk show she created and hosted for over a decade, officially leaving on August 29.
“We turned 12 years in May. I’m proud of the team and what we’ve built. It’s even more fulfilling to see others replicate the format.”
