The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) announced it is expecting feedback from the Ministry of Education by Monday, as its ongoing strike hits day six.

ASUU National President, Prof Chris Piwuna, confirmed the anticipation of government response during a Saturday interview in Abuja, stating there is currently no new update. The strike, which began as a two-week warning action, follows the expiry of an ultimatum issued to the Federal Government last Sunday.

This industrial action comes amid continued negotiations to resolve disputes over welfare, funding, and the implementation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement.

The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, recently disclosed that talks have reached their final phase, with the government having released N50 billion for Earned Academic Allowances and budgeting N150 billion for further university funding in 2025.

Despite these efforts, ASUU declared the strike due to what it describes as insufficient progress on critical demands, including salary arrears, promotion payments, and the protection of lecturers from victimization.

The Federal Government and parliament have expressed determination to broker peace and prevent escalation, with the Deputy Senate President emphasizing efforts to resolve the crisis peacefully. Meanwhile, ASUU branches continue to withdraw services as the strike persists.
