The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced plans to launch a computer-based version of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), known as CB-WASSCE, in a bid to curb examination malpractice and improve efficiency.
According to WAEC, the new format will be introduced next year for current SS3 students across Nigeria. It will be a hybrid model, combining both digital and manual components.
During a stakeholder sensitisation rally held in Port Harcourt, Adeniran Amusan, Zonal Coordinator of WAEC’s Port Harcourt office, explained that the initiative aims to enhance transparency, reduce exam leakages, and address common logistical challenges.
“The CB-WASSCE will eliminate problems like late arrival of question papers. The system will also automatically time students, ensuring fairness and transparency,” Amusan said.
He added that objective questions will be taken on the computer, while essay and practical sections will still be written manually using answer booklets.
Amusan emphasized that the change aligns with global best practices and will help prepare students for a more digital, technology-driven world. He encouraged students, teachers, parents, and schools to embrace the transition.
“Students will not face extra charges for the computer-based exams. It’s faster and more efficient,” he added.
While many students welcomed the development as a step toward digital literacy and modernisation, some expressed concerns about limited access to computers and digital training.
Others, however, voiced optimism, saying the move could spark a broader shift in how education is delivered and assessed in Nigeria.
