The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons has announced that it secured a seven-year jail term for 26-year-old Chinonso Omengor, identified as a key player in trafficking individuals abroad for prostitution and arranging foreign trips that facilitate such activities.

Her conviction comes less than a day after the agency revealed it had also secured the sentencing of three traffickers in Borno State.

NAPTIP made the disclosure on Monday through a brief update posted on its official Facebook page.

According to the announcement, Omengor was first brought before a Federal High Court in Asaba, Delta State, in October 2021, with Justice F.A. Olubanjo presiding over the matter.

The statement explained that she received her judgment on November 13, where she was handed seven years’ imprisonment on each count, along with a N10m fine.

Additionally, the court directed her to compensate the victim with N1m.

The statement read, “A Federal High Court sitting in Asaba, Delta State, presided over by Hon. Justice F.A. Olubanjo, has convicted Chinonso Omengor (26, female) for the exportation of persons for prostitution and organising foreign travels that promote prostitution, contrary to Sections 14(b) and 18 of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015.

“The sentence was seven years imprisonment on each count, to run concurrently, and a cumulative fine of N10m, plus N1M compensation to the victim.”

Earlier on Monday, reports indicate that NAPTIP had also secured the sentencing of three individuals to a total of nine years in prison for offences related to human exploitation, including the attempted sale of a one-week-old baby.

The trio — 44-year-old Umaru Wadai, 39-year-old Promise Utibe, and 50-year-old Ifeoma Ajoturah — were arraigned on May 11 before Justice Aisha Ndume of a Borno State High Court.
