Voter turnout was notably low on Saturday during the State House of Assembly rerun election in Ungogo Local Government Area of Kano State, as many polling units recorded only a handful of voters several hours after voting commenced.
At Panisau Polling Unit, five electoral officials arrived around 8:00 a.m., but by 10:30 a.m., only six voters had been accredited and cast their ballots.
A similar situation was observed at Polling Unit 003 in Kera Panisau Ward, where 804 voters are registered. As of 11:00 a.m., just 19 people had voted, according to the presiding officer, Sani Kabiru. At Polling Unit 019 in Ezier, only four out of 31 registered voters had participated at the time of reporting.
In Ungogo Kudu, where 54 voters are registered, only three individuals had voted, presiding officer Aisha Sani Dalha confirmed. Meanwhile, at Ungogo Kudu I, which has 1,378 registered voters, 77 people had cast their ballots as of the time this report was filed, according to the presiding officer, Basma Ahmad Salihu.
Observers also noted that ballot papers issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) did not carry the logos of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), and the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The low turnout has sparked concerns among stakeholders, as the rerun election was expected to draw greater participation from voters in the area.
