The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has cautioned newly promoted senior officers to steer clear of corruption, abuse of office, and indiscipline, stressing that such misconduct will not be tolerated under his leadership.

Disu gave the warning on Monday during the decoration ceremony of officers elevated to the ranks of Assistant Inspectors-General of Police and Commissioners of Police at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

According to the police chief, promotion is not merely a reward but a call to greater responsibility, noting that the officers are now expected to uphold the highest standards of discipline, integrity, and professionalism.

He emphasised that the newly promoted officers must lead by example and take full responsibility for the conduct of personnel under their commands. He warned that weak supervision often leads to misconduct, adding that strict accountability would be enforced.

Disu further stated that officers would be judged not only by their operational performance but also by the behaviour of those under their leadership, urging them to maintain firm and consistent supervision at all times.

The IGP also highlighted the importance of people-focused policing, calling on the officers to prioritise professionalism, respect for human rights, and responsiveness to public concerns in their duties.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to ongoing reforms aimed at improving efficiency, transparency, and public trust, while encouraging officers to adopt modern policing methods and discard outdated practices.

As part of efforts to strengthen leadership capacity, Disu announced that newly promoted Deputy Inspectors-General and Assistant Inspectors-General would participate in a strategic leadership retreat beginning March 24, organised in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme.

The retreat, he said, will focus on enhancing leadership skills, professionalism, and aligning the force with global best practices in modern policing.
