European football governing body UEFA has sanctioned Benfica following a racism controversy that marred their recent Champions League playoff encounter with Real Madrid.

The disciplinary action comes after incidents involving Benfica supporters during the match in Portugal, where they were accused of engaging in racist behaviour.

The high-profile clash was overshadowed by the controversy, particularly after Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior alleged that Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni directed racist remarks at him during the game.

Following an investigation, UEFA confirmed the misconduct and announced a series of penalties against the Portuguese club. Benfica have been fined €40,000 and handed a partial stadium closure, which has been suspended.

In addition, the club was fined €8,000 for supporters’ use of a laser pointer and €25,000 for throwing objects onto the pitch.

UEFA also imposed a one-match suspension on Benfica assistant coach Machado as part of the disciplinary measures.

The sanctions highlight UEFA’s continued stance against racism and fan misconduct in European competitions.
