Dr. Iyabo Obasanjo has officially withdrawn from the race for the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship ticket in Ogun State ahead of the 2027 elections.
The former lawmaker and daughter of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo made her decision known on Monday through a personally signed statement.
Her withdrawal comes shortly after Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, widely known as Yayi, was adopted as the APC’s consensus governorship candidate in the state.
The announcement of Adeola’s adoption was made by Governor Dapo Abiodun during a stakeholders’ meeting of the party held in Ogun State. The meeting had in attendance key party leaders, including former governors and other influential stakeholders.
In her statement issued after the meeting, Obasanjo explained that her decision to step down was in respect of party unity and supremacy. She noted that she had been actively consulting and mobilising support across the state prior to the development.
Congratulating Adeola on his emergence, she wished him success in the journey ahead and expressed appreciation to party leaders at both state and national levels for the opportunity to contest.
Obasanjo also extended gratitude to her supporters across Ogun State, commending their loyalty and steadfastness throughout her campaign consultations. She urged them to remain hopeful and united as the party moves forward.
Her withdrawal marks a significant moment in the APC’s build-up to the 2027 elections, as efforts continue to consolidate support around a consensus candidate in the state.
