A former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Zana Akpagu, has resigned his membership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing unresolved court cases and legal uncertainties within the party.
In a resignation letter dated April 26, 2026, and made available to journalists on Friday in Calabar, Akpagu said the decision followed extensive consultations with family members, friends, associates and political supporters.
“I write to inform you of my resignation of my membership of the African Democratic Congress with immediate effect.
“This decision comes after consultation with family, friends, associates and followers, largely based on the uncertainties arising from the unsettled court cases and legal hurdles placed on the pathway of the ADC,” the letter read in part.
Akpagu, who served as Vice-Chancellor of UNICAL from 2015 to 2020, is a Professor of African and Caribbean Literatures in French and remains a prominent figure in academic and socio-political circles in Cross River State.
In the letter, he expressed appreciation to members of the party for their support during his time in the ADC.
“I express appreciation to all members for the understanding and support. Thanks for your understanding,” he added.
Although he did not disclose his next political move, his resignation has sparked speculation and possible realignments ahead of future elections in Cross River State.
The letter was addressed to the ADC Chairman of Ipong Ward in Obudu Local Government Area, Emmanuel Ugar Ugwakong, and was duly acknowledged by the party.
