As the countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup gathers pace, at least 14 players of Nigerian descent are expected to grace football’s biggest stage, not in the colours of Nigeria, but for eight different countries.
The tournament, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will proceed without the Super Eagles after Nigeria failed to secure qualification. However, several footballers with Nigerian roots will still be part of the global spectacle, representing nations they pledged their international futures to.
Among the most prominent names is France star Michael Olise, whose impressive performances have established him as one of Europe’s most exciting attacking talents. Austria will look to the leadership and experience of captain David Alaba, while England is expected to parade a strong contingent of Nigerian-born talents, including Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze, and Noni Madueke.
Germany’s hopes will be boosted by the creativity of Jamal Musiala and the midfield strength of Felix Nmecha, both of whom have Nigerian heritage. Switzerland could also feature key players with Nigerian roots such as defender Manuel Akanji and forward Noah Okafor.
Across the Atlantic, the United States is likely to depend on striker Folarin Balogun, while Canada’s growing football project includes the Nigerian-descended duo of Tani Oluwaseyi and Promise David.
South Africa may also have Nigerian representation through defender Ime Okon, while midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka, who is eligible for Nigeria, is expected to be part of Austria’s plans for the tournament.
The development once again highlights the growing influence of Nigerian talent across world football, with several players who were eligible to represent the Super Eagles choosing to pursue their international careers elsewhere.
