Michael Carrick is set to begin a new chapter at Manchester United after earning the role of permanent head coach following an impressive spell as interim manager.
Carrick guided United back into the UEFA Champions League places after taking charge in January, recording 11 wins and three draws in 16 matches. His remarkable turnaround saw the Red Devils climb from sixth to third in the Premier League standings, prompting the club to hand him a full-time contract.
Despite the achievement, Carrick has made it clear that qualifying for the Champions League is only the beginning, insisting the club must continue to improve and aim higher next season.
As he prepares for his first full campaign in charge, several major tasks await the former midfielder.
One of Carrick’s biggest challenges will be creating a clear playing identity for the team. Although results improved under his leadership, some supporters remain unconvinced by the style of play, with critics pointing out that the team often relied on individual brilliance rather than a consistent tactical approach.
Another pressing issue is replacing veteran midfielder Casemiro, who is expected to leave at the end of the season. The Brazilian enjoyed a strong resurgence under Carrick and played a key role in United’s late push for a top-four finish, but the club must now find a long-term successor in midfield.
The upcoming transfer window is also expected to be crucial. United will need smart recruitment to strengthen the squad and close the gap on rivals such as Arsenal and Manchester City. Recent signings have shown promise, and the club hopes another productive window can help restore them as title contenders.
Carrick will also be tasked with keeping hold of club captain Bruno Fernandes, who has been one of the standout performers in the league this season. Fernandes had previously attracted interest from Saudi Arabia, but United’s return to Europe’s top competition may strengthen their chances of retaining the midfielder.
