Reaching the UEFA Champions League final is regarded as one of the biggest achievements in club football, but for some teams, the dream of lifting Europe’s most prestigious trophy ended in heartbreak.
Over the years, several top clubs have fought through difficult campaigns, defeated Europe’s elite sides and reached the final, only to fall short at the last hurdle. While some suffered dramatic defeats in extra time or penalties, others endured painful collapses that denied them a place in football history.
Despite never winning the competition, these clubs remain unforgettable parts of the Champions League story.
Here are some of the most notable clubs that reached the UEFA Champions League or European Cup final without ever lifting the trophy.
Atlético Madrid – Final Appearances: 1974, 2014, 2016
Few clubs understand Champions League heartbreak better than Atlético Madrid.
The Spanish side reached three finals and lost all of them, including two painful defeats against city rivals Real Madrid. Their 2014 loss remains one of the most dramatic in Champions League history after Sergio Ramos scored a stoppage-time equaliser just moments before Atlético were crowned champions.
Two years later, Diego Simeone’s men suffered another heartbreaking defeat to Real Madrid, this time on penalties in Milan.
Despite establishing themselves as one of Europe’s strongest sides under Simeone, the Champions League trophy still remains missing from Atlético’s cabinet.
Arsenal – Final Appearance: 2006
Arsenal came closest to European glory in 2006 when they faced Barcelona in Paris.
The Premier League side took the lead through Sol Campbell despite being reduced to 10 men after goalkeeper Jens Lehmann was sent off early in the match. However, Barcelona mounted a late comeback to win 2-1 and deny Arsenal their first Champions League title.
Although Arsène Wenger built one of England’s most dominant teams during his reign, the Champions League remained the missing piece of his success at the North London club.
Valencia – Final Appearances: 2000, 2001
Valencia enjoyed one of the best periods in the club’s history at the turn of the century, reaching back-to-back Champions League finals.
However, the Spanish side lost 3-0 to Real Madrid in 2000 before suffering another painful defeat on penalties against Bayern Munich the following year.
Their inability to convert those opportunities into European success remains one of the club’s biggest disappointments.
Tottenham Hotspur – Final Appearance: 2019
Tottenham Hotspur produced one of the most memorable runs to the Champions League final in 2019.
After dramatic victories over Manchester City and Ajax, including Lucas Moura’s famous hat-trick in Amsterdam, Spurs reached their first-ever Champions League final.
However, their dream ended in Madrid as Liverpool secured a 2-0 victory through goals from Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi.
Borussia Mönchengladbach – Final Appearance: 1977
Borussia Mönchengladbach were among Europe’s most entertaining teams during the 1970s and dominated German football for several years.
Their golden generation reached the European Cup final in 1977 but lost to Liverpool in Rome. Since then, the club has never returned to the final.
Stade de Reims – Final Appearances: 1956, 1959
Before the rise of Paris Saint-Germain, Stade de Reims were one of France’s biggest football clubs.
The French side reached two of the first four European Cup finals but lost both to the legendary Real Madrid team led by Alfredo Di Stéfano and Ferenc Puskás.
Despite their historic achievements, Reims never managed to claim European glory.
Leeds United – Final Appearance: 1975
Leeds United’s defeat to Bayern Munich in the 1975 European Cup final remains one of football’s most controversial finals.
The English side were denied several penalty appeals before eventually losing 2-0 in Paris, leading to outrage among supporters and years of debate over officiating decisions.
Fiorentina – Final Appearance: 1957
Fiorentina became the first Italian club to reach a European Cup final when they faced Real Madrid in 1957.
The Italian side held their own for much of the encounter before eventually losing 2-0 to the Spanish giants, who were dominating European football at the time.
Despite enjoying domestic success over the years, Fiorentina never returned to another Champions League final.
Monaco – Final Appearance: 2004
Monaco shocked Europe during the 2003/04 campaign with a talented squad featuring Fernando Morientes, Patrice Evra and Ludovic Giuly.
After eliminating Real Madrid and Chelsea, the French club reached the final but suffered a 3-0 defeat to José Mourinho’s Porto in Germany.
That remains Monaco’s only Champions League final appearance.
Bayer Leverkusen – Final Appearance: 2002
Bayer Leverkusen endured one of the most painful seasons in football history during the 2001/02 campaign.
The German side finished runners-up in the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and Champions League in the same season. Their European dream ended in Glasgow after Zinedine Zidane’s famous volley helped Real Madrid claim a 2-1 victory.
Despite consistently producing competitive teams, Leverkusen are still searching for their first Champions League title.
