Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi has been officially cleared to contest in the presidential primary of the Nigeria Democratic Congress as preparations intensify for the 2027 general election.
The clearance was announced on Wednesday by Sam Egwu, who chairs the party’s National Screening Committee. He disclosed that Obi met all constitutional and legal conditions required to participate in the party’s presidential primary.
The screening exercise took place in Abuja on Tuesday, where the committee reviewed Obi’s credentials and assessed his eligibility under the party’s constitution, the Electoral Act, and the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.
According to Egwu, the committee was satisfied with the documents presented by Obi and his responses to questions during the exercise, leading to his approval for the contest. He noted that the date for the primary election would be announced by the party at a later time.
Reacting after the exercise, Obi said the screening lasted over two and a half hours and involved detailed checks of his academic certificates, NYSC documents, and age declaration. He added that he was also asked to explain his vision for the country and the leadership approach he hopes to bring if elected.
Obi confirmed that following the successful screening, he received the presidential nomination form he had earlier purchased.
He also praised the committee for what he described as a transparent and professional process, while commending the party leadership for maintaining internal democracy.
The development comes amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, as opposition parties continue consultations, alliance talks, and preparations for their primaries.
