The Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, has officially obtained the expression of interest and nomination forms to contest for the Ogun West Senatorial seat under the platform of the All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Her decision was disclosed in a statement released on Wednesday, signalling the beginning of what is expected to be a keenly contested race within the ruling APC in the state.
The development comes amid ongoing political realignments within the Ogun APC following the party’s recent endorsement of Governor Dapo Abiodun as the consensus candidate for the Ogun East Senatorial ticket.
That endorsement, which emerged from a stakeholders’ meeting held at Adeola Odutola Hall in Ijebu-Ode, has continued to stir reactions among party members, with some political camps alleging exclusion and inadequate consultation.
Against that backdrop, Salako-Oyedele’s entry into the Ogun West race is being viewed by political observers as a strategic move within the evolving power structure of the party in the state.
Speaking on her decision to contest, the deputy governor said the move represents a continuation of her commitment to public service and the people of Ogun West.
“This step marks the continuation of a journey already rooted in service, guided by clarity of purpose, and strengthened by the trust and support of Ogun indigenes, especially the Ogun West Senatorial District,” she stated.
Salako-Oyedele had earlier been mentioned among possible successors to Governor Abiodun before the party settled for a consensus arrangement regarding the governorship succession plan.
She is now expected to battle for the Senate seat reportedly linked to incumbent lawmaker Olamilekan Adeola who is now the gubernatorial candidate of the party.
Sources within the APC said her nomination forms were secured ahead of her formal declaration, an indication that consultations and political coordination within her camp had been ongoing.
Other politicians reportedly interested in the Ogun West ticket include former senator Gbolahan Dada, Waliu Taiwo, and Jimoh Ojugbele.
Party insiders say achieving a consensus among the aspirants may be difficult due to the growing number of contenders, although some stakeholders are reportedly backing the deputy governor on the grounds of gender inclusion and political balance.
If successful, Salako-Oyedele could become the first female senator from Ogun State since Iyabo Obasanjo left the Senate in 2011.
