Peter Obi has praised Nigerian nurses and midwives for their commitment and sacrifices in the healthcare sector, marking this year’s International Nurses Day.
In a message shared on his official social media page on Tuesday, Obi described nurses as the backbone of Nigeria’s health system, acknowledging their vital role in providing care across the country.
He noted that nurses and midwives occupy a special place in the nation’s healthcare system and commended their tireless efforts in serving patients despite the many challenges facing the profession.
The former governor of Anambra State said he has, over the years, supported several nursing and midwifery institutions across Nigeria, stressing that the profession remains essential to national growth and development.
Obi also highlighted the difficult conditions many Nigerian nurses work under, including inadequate equipment, poor work environments, and the burden of attending to large numbers of patients. According to him, their dedication and resilience have kept the health sector functioning despite these challenges.
He further praised Nigerian nurses abroad for their achievements in research and clinical practice, saying many have continued to excel internationally and project the country positively on the global stage.
Reaffirming his commitment to the profession, Obi pledged continued support for nurses and midwives, promising increased investment in education and professional training to help them remain globally competitive.
