Alex Iwobi has reached a significant milestone in his international career after making his 100th appearance for the Super Eagles, becoming only the fourth Nigerian player to achieve the feat.
The Fulham midfielder joined the elite group during Nigeria’s international friendly against Portugal on Wednesday, further cementing his place among the country’s football greats.
Iwobi’s century of appearances places him alongside some of the most celebrated names in Nigerian football history, including former captain Joseph Yobo, legendary goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama and current Super Eagles skipper Ahmed Musa.
The 30-year-old first represented Nigeria’s senior national team in October 2015 in a friendly match against DR Congo. Since then, he has established himself as one of the most consistent figures in the squad, playing key roles in several Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and FIFA World Cup campaigns.
Over the last decade, Iwobi has become a vital part of the Super Eagles setup, earning praise for his creativity, versatility and commitment whenever called upon to represent the country.
His latest achievement highlights not only his longevity but also his importance to the national team, having remained a regular presence through different coaching eras and tournament cycles.
With his 100th appearance, Iwobi joins an exclusive list of Nigerian footballers who have reached the landmark.
Nigeria now has several players who have reached 100 international appearances or more. The list includes Ahmed Musa with 111 caps, Vincent Enyeama with 101 caps, Joseph Yobo with 100 caps, and now Alex Iwobi who has also reached the 100-cap milestone.
Before reaching the milestone, Iwobi reflected on his journey with the national team, recalling some of his most memorable moments in a Super Eagles shirt.
Among them was his decisive goal against Zambia in 2017, which secured Nigeria’s qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and remains one of the defining moments of his international career.
With age still on his side and his influence within the squad undiminished, Iwobi is expected to add more appearances to his tally in the months ahead and could climb further up Nigeria’s all-time appearance rankings.
For now, the midfielder can celebrate joining one of the most exclusive clubs in Nigerian football history, a testament to his dedication, consistency and enduring contribution to the Super Eagles.
