The Osun State All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship Campaign Council has called on the Director-General of the Imole Campaign Council, Senator Lere Oyewumi, to present himself to security agencies for investigation over allegations linked to political killings in the state.
The call was made in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Head of Media and Publicity Committee of the Osun APC Governorship Campaign Council, Engr. Oluremi Omowaiye, and made available to journalists in Osogbo.
The statement followed comments made by Senator Oyewumi during a press conference held in Osogbo on Monday, where he accused the APC of encouraging violence and alleged that the killing of 14-year-old Ezekiel Olopade in Ilobu was orchestrated by the opposition party.
Responding, Omowaiye expressed sympathy to the family of the late Olopade but accused Oyewumi of using the incident to divert attention from what the APC described as unresolved questions surrounding previous politically related killings in Irewole Local Government Area.
“While we sympathize with the family of the deceased and support every lawful effort aimed at uncovering the circumstances surrounding his death, we strongly reject any attempt to exploit the tragic incident as a political shield against questions regarding previous political violence,” the statement said.
According to the APC Campaign Council, Oyewumi’s planned protest was not driven by a genuine pursuit of justice but rather an attempt to shift public attention from ongoing investigations into the killings of two APC members, Hon. Saheed Oyegunju and Hon. Remi Abass.
The Council recalled that Hon. Oyegunju, who served as APC Treasurer in Ward 9 of Irewole Local Government Area, was attacked and later found dead in February 2023 on the day then-presidential candidate, President Bola Tinubu, held a campaign rally in Osogbo.
It also referenced the killing of Hon. Remi Abass, former Chairman of Irewole Local Government, who was murdered within the council secretariat premises in February 2025.
The APC claimed that allegations and public reports had linked certain individuals and influential political figures to investigations surrounding the incidents and called for a thorough and impartial process by security agencies.
The Council further expressed concern over the continued absence of Jide Jọda, identified in the statement as a suspect in one of the cases, alleging that he remains at large despite reportedly being declared wanted.
The APC Campaign Council urged Senator Oyewumi to cooperate with law enforcement authorities rather than engage in what it described as political demonstrations.
It also called on the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, to ensure all persons connected to political violence in Osun State are investigated and prosecuted in line with the law.
The statement emphasized that justice should apply equally to all individuals regardless of political affiliation or status and called for accountability over all unresolved cases of political violence in the state.
As of the time of filing this report, Senator Lere Oyewumi had not publicly responded to the allegations contained in the APC Campaign Council’s statement.
