Switzerland secured first place in Group B of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Canada 2-1, while Bosnia and Herzegovina boosted their hopes of reaching the knockout stage for the first time in history with a convincing 3-1 victory over Qatar.
The final round of Group B fixtures delivered drama at both ends of the table as Switzerland and Canada advanced, Bosnia remained in contention through the best third-placed route, and Qatar’s campaign officially came to an end.
At BC Place in Vancouver, Switzerland stunned the host nation to claim top spot in the group.
After a cautious first half with limited chances, the Swiss came out firing after the restart. Ruben Vargas broke the deadlock just 40 seconds into the second half with a powerful strike that silenced the home crowd.
Ten minutes later, Johan Manzambi doubled Switzerland’s advantage after taking full advantage of poor defending to put Murat Yakin’s side firmly in control.
Canada responded late after substitute Promise David scored with his first touch only moments after entering the game, sparking hopes of a comeback. However, Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel produced important saves in the closing stages to preserve the victory.
Despite the defeat, Canada advanced to the Round of 32 as Group B runners-up, having already done enough in earlier matches to secure qualification. The hosts must now travel for their knockout fixture, with South Korea emerging as a likely opponent.
Meanwhile, in Washington, Bosnia and Herzegovina kept alive their hopes of making history after earning a 3-1 victory over Qatar.
Seeking only their second World Cup win and first in 12 years, Bosnia produced a composed display to finish third in the group and strengthen their chances of progressing as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
Kerim Alajbegovic opened the scoring in spectacular fashion with a long-range strike before Bosnia doubled their lead through an own goal credited to Qatar goalkeeper Meshaal Abunada after Edin Dzeko’s effort caused chaos in the box.
Qatar briefly threatened a comeback when Hassan Al Haidos pulled one back and later struck the post, but Bosnia regained control after the break.
Substitute Ermin Mahmic sealed the result to hand Bosnia a crucial victory and keep their Round of 32 ambitions alive.
With the group stage concluded, Switzerland marched into the knockout rounds as Group B winners, Canada progressed as runners-up, Bosnia remained hopeful of qualification through the third-place rankings, while Qatar bowed out of the tournament.
