Controversial Nigerian singer Habeeb okikiola popularly known as Portable has explained why many celebrities in the country remain silent on issues of insecurity and economic hardship, claiming that speaking openly against the government could expose them to persecution.

The “Zazu” crooner made the remarks while responding to comments by British-Nigerian rapper Skepta, who recently urged Nigerian entertainers and public figures to use their platforms to address the country’s worsening security and economic challenges.

Reacting in a video shared online, Portable praised Skepta for showing concern about Nigeria’s situation but argued that celebrities based abroad enjoy greater freedom to express their views than those living in the country.

According to the singer, many Nigerian celebrities fear possible repercussions from authorities if they become outspoken on sensitive national issues.

“Skepta, God bless you for speaking up for Nigeria,” Portable said. “But asking celebrities here to speak out is not as easy as it sounds. If we become too vocal, they can come after us.”

The singer further alleged that some individuals are still facing consequences for comments they made in the past, adding that many entertainers choose to remain cautious to avoid trouble.

Portable suggested that Nigerians in the diaspora are in a safer position to criticize developments in the country because they are beyond the direct reach of local authorities.

He claimed that celebrities living in Nigeria risk harassment and other forms of punishment if they publicly challenge the government or speak on controversial issues.

The singer also expressed frustration over the state of affairs in the country, saying many people are tired of the challenges facing Nigeria but are reluctant to voice their concerns publicly.

According to him, his immediate focus remains improving his livelihood and securing financial stability, rather than engaging in issues that could attract unwanted attention.

Portable’s comments have since sparked conversations on social media about freedom of expression, the role of celebrities in national discourse, and whether public figures should be more vocal about issues affecting ordinary Nigerians.
