Japan produced a late comeback to hold the Netherlands to a thrilling 2-2 draw in their opening Group F match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Dallas.
Daichi Kamada emerged as Japan’s hero after scoring an 89th-minute equaliser to rescue a point in a match that burst into life after a quiet first half.
After a cagey opening 45 minutes with few clear-cut chances, the Netherlands struck first shortly after the restart. Captain Virgil van Dijk rose highest to meet Ryan Gravenberch’s delivery and headed home in the 51st minute to put Ronald Koeman’s side ahead.
Japan responded quickly and restored parity six minutes later through Keito Nakamura. His low strike took a slight deflection off Jan Paul van Hecke before beating Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.
The Dutch regained control midway through the second half when Crysencio Summerville, making only his early appearances for the national team, curled a superb left-footed effort into the far corner in the 64th minute to make it 2-1.
With the Netherlands appearing set to claim all three points, Japan launched one final push. In the closing moments, Kento Shiogai’s effort found Kamada inside the box, and the midfielder’s touch forced Verbruggen into an unsuccessful save attempt as the ball crossed the line.
The late equaliser sparked celebrations among the Japanese players and supporters and ensured the points were shared in an entertaining Group F opener.
While the Netherlands may feel disappointed after surrendering their lead twice, Japan will take confidence from their resilience and ability to respond under pressure as both teams turn attention to their next group fixtures.
