Mexico became the first team to book a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 after securing a narrow 1–0 victory over South Korea in their Group A clash at Estadio Chivas in Guadalajara on Friday morning.
In a tightly contested encounter watched by 45,522 fans, a second-half mistake from South Korea goalkeeper Seung-Gyu Kim proved decisive as Mexico claimed all three points.
After a quiet opening half with limited clear chances, Mexico finally broke the deadlock five minutes after the restart. Raul Jimenez’s header was spilled by Kim, allowing Luis Romo to react quickly and calmly lift the ball into an empty net for what turned out to be the match-winning goal.
Although South Korea pushed for an equaliser late in the game, Mexico goalkeeper Raul Rangel emerged as the hero at the other end with a crucial double save to deny substitute Gue-Sung Cho and preserve his side’s lead.
The result gives Mexico six points from two matches following their opening victory over South Africa, putting Javier Aguirre’s side firmly in control of Group A and moving them into the knockout stage with a game to spare.
Finishing top of the group would allow Mexico to play their Round of 32 fixture in Mexico City and could potentially set up a later meeting with England if both teams progress through the knockout rounds.
Despite the defeat, South Korea still remain in contention for qualification but must now secure victory in their final group match against South Africa to keep their World Cup hopes alive.
Mexico will conclude their group campaign against the Czech Republic.
