Veteran Yoruba Nollywood actor Taiwo Adeshina, widely known by his stage name, Elegbeje Ado, has died.
His death was announced on Tuesday by fellow actor Kunle Afod in a tribute shared on his Instagram page.
Mourning the late actor, Afod described him as one of the legends of the Yoruba film industry whose contributions would be remembered for generations.
“We regret to announce the passing of one of the legends of the Yoruba Nollywood industry, Baba Elegbeje Ado.
“Your immense contribution to the growth of Yoruba cinema, your talent, and the joy you brought to countless lives will never be forgotten.
“Thank you for the beautiful memories and the legacy you left behind. May your soul rest in perfect peace.
“Our heartfelt condolences go to your family, friends, colleagues, and fans during this difficult time.
“Rest in peace, Baba Elegbeje Ado. Your legacy lives on forever,” Afod wrote.
According to reports, Adeshina died on Monday, June 29, after a brief illness, although the circumstances surrounding his death have not been independently confirmed.
The late actor enjoyed a career spanning more than two decades in the Yoruba movie industry, where he became renowned for portraying traditional rulers, community elders and other culturally significant characters.
His nickname, “Elegbeje Ado,” originated from one of his most memorable film roles, a performance that became closely associated with his career and earned him widespread recognition among fans of Yoruba cinema.
Beyond acting, Adeshina also served as a Christian minister, balancing his ministry with his career in the entertainment industry throughout his lifetime.
His death adds to the growing list of losses in Nigeria’s film industry in recent months.
