Former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has apologized to the club’s supporters for not addressing them following his dismissal, saying he remains proud of his time at Old Trafford despite a difficult spell in charge.
Amorim made the remarks during his first press conference as the new manager of Italian giants AC Milan, breaking his silence on his Manchester United tenure for the first time since he was sacked in January.
The Portuguese coach was relieved of his duties after 14 months at Old Trafford, having overseen United’s worst-ever Premier League finish and a defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Europa League final.
His departure came shortly after a tense post-match press conference following United’s 1-1 draw with Leeds United, during which he appeared to criticise the club’s hierarchy.
Reflecting on his time in England, Amorim admitted he made mistakes but said the experience helped him grow as a coach.
“The only thing I can say is that I learned a lot and I made some mistakes,” Amorim said.
“I didn’t have the opportunity and I am sorry for that, to say something to the Manchester United fans at the moment.
“I am really proud to have been their coach for a year.”
The 41-year-old, now begins a new chapter at AC Milan, where he will look to rebuild his reputation after a disappointing spell with the Premier League club.
