Nigerian comedian and actor Bovi has reignited the age-old Lionel Messi-Cristiano Ronaldo debate, insisting that the Argentine football icon is a better player than his longtime rival and joking that anyone who claims otherwise should not be trusted in business.
In a video shared on his Instagram page on Wednesday, Bovi argued that while fans are entitled to prefer Ronaldo or even regard him as the Greatest of All Time (GOAT), claiming that the Portuguese captain is a better footballer than Messi reflects a flawed assessment of reality.
The comedian suggested that a person’s opinion on the Messi-Ronaldo rivalry could serve as an unusual test of judgment before entering into a business partnership.
“If you want to get into business with someone you don’t know so well and you’re going to invest your money together, ask the person who his favourite footballer is,” Bovi said.
“If he says Ronaldo, you might still want to do business with him. If he says Ronaldo is his GOAT, that’s perfectly okay. But ask him between Ronaldo and Messi who is a better footballer. If he says matter-of-factly that Ronaldo is a better footballer than Messi, pick up your shoes and run.”
According to Bovi, such a response suggests a tendency to ignore obvious facts in favour of personal bias, warning that the same mindset could influence important decisions outside football.
He maintained that while the debate over who is the greatest player may remain subjective, Messi’s overall quality as a footballer is difficult to dispute.
The remarks have since sparked fresh conversations across social media, with supporters of both football superstars once again defending their respective icons in one of the sport’s most enduring rivalries.
Messi and Ronaldo have dominated world football for nearly two decades, winning multiple Ballon d’Or awards, league titles and major international honours, while inspiring generations of football fans around the globe.
