Two persons have died in a road crash that occurred at Ogere Junction along the Ijebu Ode-Benin Expressway in Ogun State, while two others escaped unhurt.
The crash, which happened at about 5:10 a.m. on Thursday, involved a white Mack truck with registration number ABC660XC and an orange Peugeot J5 bus with no visible registration number.
The spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Afolabi Odunsi, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Thursday.
Odunsi said four adult males were involved in the accident, adding that two of them died while the remaining two escaped without injuries.
According to him, preliminary investigations revealed that route violation and speeding were the likely causes of the crash.
He explained that the impact of the collision caused the Peugeot J5 bus to catch fire, leaving its front section completely burnt.
Odunsi said FRSC rescue personnel arrived at the scene within two minutes of receiving the distress call and immediately commenced traffic control by diverting vehicles to an alternative carriageway to ease congestion while the wreckage was cleared.
He added that the bodies of the deceased were evacuated by officers of the Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division, Ogbere Division, and deposited at a mortuary.
Reacting to the incident, the Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Oludare Ogunjobi, sympathised with the families of the victims and urged motorists to strictly obey traffic regulations.
He warned against speeding and route violations, particularly during poor weather conditions and on wet roads, describing such dangerous driving habits as major contributors to fatal crashes across the country.
Ogunjobi reaffirmed the command’s commitment to improving road safety through sustained enforcement, public awareness campaigns and prompt rescue operations. He also advised motorists to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and maintain safe speeds before embarking on any journey.
The latest crash comes days after the FRSC disclosed that 161 people lost their lives in 415 road crashes recorded across Ogun State between January and May 2026, while 1,007 others sustained varying degrees of injuries during the period.
