Egypt booked their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Australia 4-2 on penalties following a thrilling 1-1 draw after extra time in Dallas.
The Pharaohs held their nerve from the spot to secure a memorable victory and keep their World Cup dream alive, with captain Mohamed Salah calmly converting one of Egypt’s penalties.
Egypt made the brighter start and deservedly took the lead in the 13th minute when Emam Ashour powered home a header. The African side dominated much of the opening half and almost doubled their advantage early in the second period, but Omar Marmoush failed to capitalize on a clear opportunity.
Australia fought back and restored parity in the 55th minute through an own goal by Mohamed Hany, whose attempted clearance ended up in the back of his own net.
Both sides pushed for a winner in regulation time, with Egypt coming closest deep into stoppage time. However, Australian goalkeeper Patrick Beach produced a superb save to deny Ramy Rabia, forcing the contest into extra time.
Salah became increasingly influential during the additional 30 minutes, but neither side could find the decisive goal, sending the match to a penalty shootout.
Australia introduced experienced goalkeeper Mat Ryan in the 119th minute specifically for the shootout, but the tactical switch failed to pay off as Egypt converted all four of their penalties.
Salah confidently chipped his effort down the middle, while Australia’s hopes were dashed after defenders Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington both failed to convert from the spot.
The victory sends Egypt into the Round of 16, where they will face either defending champions Argentina or Cape Verde as they continue their quest for World Cup glory.
