Manchester United have completed the signing of Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa after activating his €41 million release clause, following the collapse of the club’s proposed move for Atalanta star Éderson.
The Red Devils swiftly turned their attention to the experienced Premier League midfielder after negotiations for Éderson failed to progress, identifying Tielemans as their preferred alternative to bolster the heart of the squad ahead of the 2026/27 season.
According to renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, United triggered Tielemans’ release clause at Aston Villa and quickly reached an agreement on personal terms, paving the way for the Belgian international’s move to Old Trafford.
Romano added that Tielemans has fully bought into Manchester United’s long-term sporting project and is set to become the club’s second midfield signing of the summer transfer window after the arrival of Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos.
The completion of the deal effectively ends United’s pursuit of Éderson, with the club opting to move decisively for Tielemans after talks for the Atalanta midfielder broke down.
Tielemans arrives at Old Trafford with extensive Premier League experience, having established himself as one of the division’s most accomplished midfielders during his time with Leicester City before joining Aston Villa. Renowned for his passing range, composure under pressure and ability to contribute goals from midfield, the 29-year-old is expected to add creativity, leadership and balance to United’s engine room.
The signing represents another major piece of Manchester United’s summer rebuild as the club continues strengthening Michael Carrick’s squad with proven quality ahead of the new campaign. An official announcement is expected in the coming days after the completion of the remaining formalities.
