Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer says missing out on England’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup has fuelled his determination to return stronger as he prepares for the new Premier League season under new manager Xabi Alonso.
Palmer, who played a key role in England’s run to the Euro 2024 final, was one of the biggest omissions from Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad after enduring a difficult campaign with Chelsea last season.
England eventually finished third at the World Cup, but the disappointment of missing the tournament has only strengthened the 24-year-old’s resolve.
Speaking during Chelsea’s pre-season tour in Sydney on Friday, Palmer admitted the snub was painful but said it has motivated him to prove his critics wrong.
“It’s like anything, if someone tells you’re essentially not good enough to get in the squad, then you’re going to think, ‘all right’ and try and go extra harder,” Palmer said.
While many of his international teammates were competing at the World Cup, Palmer enjoyed an extended seven-week holiday, using the break to recharge physically and mentally ahead of the new campaign.
The midfielder believes the rest has left him refreshed and ready to make a strong impact as Chelsea look to recover from last season’s disappointing 10th-place finish.
Palmer also praised the influence of new head coach Xabi Alonso, describing the former Spain international as a welcome addition whose ideas have already energised the squad.
“Him and his staff have been good. You know, a breath of fresh air for us players with his ideas and stuff. So yeah, we’re enjoying it,” he said.
The England star also expressed excitement over Chelsea’s British record £117 million signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa.
Palmer said he is delighted to reunite with one of his closest friends and believes their contrasting playing styles could benefit the Blues.
“Everyone knows how good he is, and obviously he’s one of my best friends. So I’m very happy about it.
“I think we’re two different players. He’s more physical than me, on and off the ball. He likes to drive with it. I like to play passes, so I think we can play well together,” he added.
Chelsea have already begun life under Alonso with an entertaining 6-4 victory over Western Sydney Wanderers and will continue their pre-season preparations with a clash against Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur in Sydney.
After the disappointment of missing football’s biggest tournament, Palmer will now be hoping that a well-earned break, renewed motivation and a fresh start under Alonso can help him rediscover his best form and force his way back into England’s plans.
